Kinnaur, February 5: Tragedy struck as one individual lost their life, another remains missing, and a third was rescued following a car’s plunge into the Sutlej River in Kinnaur district, according to local police reports on Monday.
The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon while three occupants were en route from Lahaul Spiti’s Kaza town to Kinnaur district in Himachal Pradesh. The group comprised two tourists from Tamil Nadu and a local driver from Lahaul Spiti.
The mishap unfolded when the driver lost control on National Highway 305 near Pangi Nala, causing the vehicle to tumble approximately 200 meters below the road into the Satluj River in Kinnaur, as detailed by the police. Two individuals were swept away in the river, while one sustained severe injuries.
Upon receiving information about the accident on Sunday, the Reckong Peo police, along with Quick Response Team (QRT) and Home Guard personnel, swiftly reached the scene. The injured person was promptly taken to the regional hospital in Reckong Peo for medical attention, while an extensive search operation was initiated to locate the missing individuals.

Despite thorough efforts along the banks of the Sutlej and surrounding areas on Sunday evening, the missing persons remained unaccounted for. However, on Monday morning, search officials discovered the body of the driver, identified as Tenzin, a resident of Kaza, at the accident site. As of now, a search operation continues to locate the third missing person, as confirmed by the police. Further details on the incident are pending.
