50% reservation cap, caste census if INDIA bloc voted to power: Rahul Gandhi's big poll promise | Action Punjab

ACTION PUNJAB NEWS Desk: Making big promises ahead of 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi promised a nationwide caste census and the removal of the 50% reservation cap if the INDIA bloc forms the government at the Centre.

He also claimed that the BJP attempted to overthrow the JMM-Congress-RJD government in Jharkhand because the chief minister was tribal.

“Want to congratulate all alliance MLAs, (Champai) Soren ji, as they stopped the BJP-RSS conspiracy and protected the poor’s government,” Gandhi said.

Gandhi claimed that Dalits, tribals, and Other Backward Classes (OBCs) were forced to work as bonded labourers and that their participation was limited in large corporations, hospitals, schools, colleges, and courts.

“This is the most important question before India. Our first step would be to conduct a caste census in the country,” the former Congress chief stated.

Noting that existing provisions do not allow for more than 50% reservation, Gandhi promised that an Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance government would “throw out” the 50% reservation cap.

“The reservation for Dalits and Adivasis will not be reduced. I guarantee that the underprivileged sections of society will receive their rights. This is the most serious issue: social and economic injustice,” Gandhi said.

He claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi used to identify as an OBC, but when the demand for a caste census was made, he stated that there are only two castes: rich and poor.

“When the time came to give rights to OBCs, Dalits, tribals, Modi ji says there are no castes and when it is time to get votes, he says he is an OBC,” said Gandhi.

Gandhi slammed the BJP shortly after the Champai Soren-led government won the trust vote in the Jharkhand assembly, claiming that the BJP attempted to destabilise the government because it could not accept there is a tribal Chief Minister.

“Congress and JMM stood against them together and the government was saved. They do this in all opposition-ruled states through probe agencies and money power. They (BJP) are attacking democracy and, the Constitution and want to suppress the voice of the people. The INDIA coalition will not let the voice of democracy be suppressed,” he said.
