ACTION PUNJAB NEWS Desk: Veteran politician Sharad Pawar’s party has been assigned a new name by the Election Commission – the Nationalist Congress Party Sharadchandra Pawar.
The development comes a day after the Election Commission ruled that the faction led by his nephew, Ajit Pawar, is the real NCP and will be given its own name and symbol (a clock).
The Election Commission stated that “the name of your group/faction as a one-time option for the purposes of the forthcoming election to six seats in the Rajya Sabha from Maharashtra” had been accepted.
The poll body has yet to designate a symbol for NCP Sharadchandra Pawar.
Notably, Ajit Pawar defected from his uncle’s side in July to join the BJP and be sworn in as Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister. On Tuesday, the Election Commission declared that AJit Pawar’s NCP faction could keep the party name and symbol because he had more MLAs in the state Assembly.
The NCP has 53 MLAs, but only 12 have sided with Sharad Pawar.
