    Uttarakhand takes the lead, clears Uniform Civil Code Bill | ActionPunjab

    PTC Web Desk: In a landmark decision and historic move, Uttarakhand on Wednesay became the first state to approve the Uniform Civil Code Bill, aiming to establish consistency in laws pertaining to marriage, divorce, and inheritance across various religions. The Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly passed the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, marking Uttarakhand as the pioneer among Indian states to implement this legal framework.

    Amidst enthusiastic “Jai Shri Ram” chants, the Bill received approval through a voice vote. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, the proponent of the Bill, aimed to establish uniform laws concerning marriage, divorce, land, property, and inheritance, applicable to all citizens irrespective of their religious beliefs.

    During the Uniform Civil Code Bill’s presentation in the state Assembly, CM Dhami said, “The Uniform Civil Code will ensure equality for everyone, eliminating discrimination in areas such as marriage, maintenance, inheritance, and divorce… The UCC is primarily designed to address gender discrimination, putting an end to injustices against women. It is a crucial step towards stopping atrocities against ‘Matrishakti’… Discrimination against our sisters and daughters must cease, and it’s time to grant equal rights to half of the population.”
