    4 dead, 250 injured in riots ; schools shut, internet services down | Action Punjab

    Uttarakhand madrasa demolition: At least four people tragically lost their lives, 250 others injured including police officers after a widespread violence following the demolition of an illegal madrasa and an adjoining mosque in Haldwani in Uttarakhand. 

    The violence erupted on Thursday and prompted the imposition of a curfew in the city, with shoot-at-sight orders issued against rioters and a complete shutdown of internet services.

    Witnessing the deteriorating situation, the authorities have decided that schools will remain closed for Friday.


    • The violence in Haldwani, Uttarakhand resulted in the deaths of four individuals and 100 policemen sustained injuries and were subsequently admitted to hospitals.
    • Tensions escalated when a team of government officials, accompanied by a significant police presence, attempted to dismantle the structures in accordance with a court order. 
    • The authorities had declared the madrasa and mosque illegal, prompting their demolition. 
    • Demolitions were conducted with a significant presence of police and Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) personnel, aiming to clear government land allegedly encroached upon by the madrasa and mosque. 
    • The Vanbhulpura mob threw stones at the demolition crew in protest. All of them are being treated at a local hospital. Shoot-at-sight orders have been issued in the area, and security has been increased.
    • The administration has also ordered the closure of all schools and colleges. 
    • Uttarakhand government has put high alert in the state as a precaution after the violence.
    • A curfew has been enforced in Banbhoolpura on the orders of the District Magistrate and a shoot-at-sight order has also been issued against ‘rioters’.
