3 New criminal laws, which replace colonial-era legislations, to come into effect from July 1 | ActionPunjab

New criminal laws: The three new criminal laws – Bharatiya Nyaya (Second) Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha (Second) Sanhita, and the Bharatiya Sakshya (Second) Bill- will come into effect from July 1 and replace the country’s colonial-era legislations.

These new laws will replace the Indian Penal Code of 1860, the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) of 1973 and the Indian Evidence Act, of 1872.

The three laws were approved by Parliament, and President Droupadi Murmu gave the nod last December.

According to three similar notices issued by the Union Home Ministry, certain provisions of the new laws will go into effect on July 1.

The three laws aim to completely restructure the country’s criminal justice system by defining various offences and punishments.
