Rohit Sharma cautions Sarfaraz Khan: 'Don't try to be a hero' | ActionPunjab

ACTION PUNJAB NEWS Desk: During the Ranchi Test, as India sought the final two England wickets, Rohit Sharma intervened just in time to prevent Sarfaraz Khan from making a grave error.

Rohit Sharma was in his element during the crucial stage of the Ranchi Test. As India aimed to secure victory and clinch the series, Rohit deployed spinners Kuldeep Yadav, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Ravindra Jadeja. In a pivotal moment during the 47th over, Rohit instructed Sarfaraz Khan, fielding in the deep, to switch from long-on to silly mid-off. However, while responding to the captain’s call, Sarfaraz contemplated a risky move.

In a daring move, Sarfaraz decided to field without a helmet at the close-in position, causing a delay in Kuldeep’s delivery. Rohit promptly intervened, cautioning Sarfaraz against the perilous act and emphasizing the importance of safety. Umpire Kumar Dharmasena also intervened, affirming the necessity of wearing a helmet in close-in fielding positions.

Rohit’s timely intervention proved crucial, as just two balls later, a defensive shot from Bashir struck Sarfaraz on the helmet with considerable force. Despite Sarfaraz’s earlier fielding prowess, including two catches, his decision to field without protection was deemed a lapse in judgment. Rohit’s swift action reflected his commitment to fulfill his promise to Sarfaraz’s father, Naushad, to take care of his son.

The incident served as a stark reminder of the tragic fate of Indian cricketer Raman Lamba in 1998. Lamba lost his life after being struck on the head while fielding at short leg without a helmet, highlighting the critical importance of safety in cricket.

India poised to win the series tomorrow

India is on the brink of clinching the series tomorrow, thanks to an exceptional display of cricket prowess. The much-needed breakthroughs came from the skilled hands of Ravichandran Ashwin, who, at the beckoning of captain Rohit Sharma, dismissed Ben Foakes and James Anderson in a single over. This stellar performance marked Ashwin’s 35th five-wicket-haul in Test cricket, placing him on par with the legendary Anil Kumble in terms of innings taken to achieve this feat.

Ashwin’s impressive figures of 5/51, combined with Kuldeep Yadav’s impactful 4/22, restricted England to a mere 145 runs in their second innings. Consequently, India was set a target of 192 runs to win the match. Currently leading the series 2-1, India’s openers, Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal, have laid a solid foundation by propelling the team to 40/0 at a rapid scoring rate.

During their partnership, Rohit Sharma reached a significant milestone, surpassing 4000 Test runs and achieving 1000 runs against England. However, India’s favorable position in the match is not solely attributed to its seasoned players but also to the remarkable contribution of the young talent, 23-year-old Dhruv Jurel. Playing only his second Test match, Jurel showcased his batting prowess by scoring a maiden Test fifty, rescuing India from a precarious position of 177/7 to a commendable total of 307 runs.
