Bengaluru, often referred to as “India’s Silicon Valley,” grapples with an acute water scarcity even before the onset of peak summer. Weak southwest monsoon rains have led to depleted groundwater levels and reduced water levels in the reservoirs of the Cauvery River basin, which serves as a crucial water source for the city’s roughly 14 million residents, as well as its numerous IT companies and startups.

As a consequence, residents are forced to ration their water consumption and are confronted with exorbitant prices for water tankers. The soaring demand has prompted water tanker dealers to increase their rates significantly. For instance, a 12,000-liter tanker, which previously cost around 1,200 rupees ($14.47), is now priced as high as 2,000 rupees ($24.11) in some areas.
Santhosh C.A., a resident of Horamavu in north Bengaluru, expressed the challenges faced by residents, highlighting the need to book water tankers two days in advance and the adverse impact on his plants and personal hygiene routines.
