Lok Sabha elections: Election Commissioner Arun Goel resigned on Saturday. This comes just days before the poll body announces the schedule for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Following Goel’s departure, the Election Commission of India (ECI) is now a one-member body led by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar.
Goel’s resignation is unexpected given that he had three years remaining on his tenure. There was already one opening for an election commissioner. Previously, Election Commissioner Anup Pandey retired in February.
Goel assumed charge as Election Commissioner (EC) of India on November 21, 2022.
