2 Councillors return to AAP after brief stint with BJP during Chandigarh polls | Action Punjab

ACTION PUNJAB NEWS Desk: Two Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillors from the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation have rejoined the party less than a month after defecting to the BJP. Poonam Devi and Neha Musawat, who had earlier joined the BJP alongside a third councillor, Gurcharan Kala, described their return to the AAP as a “ghar wapsi” (returning home).

Taking to X, AAP Punjab said, “2 AAP councillors – Neha Musawat (Ward No. 19) & Poonam Kumari (Ward No. 16) have joined back the Aam Aadmi Party under the leadership of @RajbirGhumanAAP, OSD to Punjab CM and Dr S.S. Ahluwalia, Sah-Prabhari, AAP Chandigarh. Warm welcome to both the councillors on their ‘ghar wapsi'”.

The councillors shifted allegiance to the BJP on February 18, just a day before the Supreme Court chastised the returning officer, Anil Masih, for tampering with ballots and meddling with Chandigarh’s mayoral election process.

Notably, the Bharatiya Janata Party won both the Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor positions in Chandigarh on Monday.

Kuljeet Singh Sandhu of the BJP won the election for Senior Deputy Mayor of Chandigarh with 19 votes.

He defeated Gurpreet Singh Gabi, the INDIA bloc candidate.

The BJP received 19 votes, followed by the INDIA bloc (Congress + AAP) with 16. A single vote was deemed invalid.

Rajendra Kumar Sharma won the Deputy Mayor position with 19 votes, while the opposition received 17.

The BJP-led bloc held 14 seats in the 35-member Chandigarh Municipality, but their numbers increased on February 19 when three Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillors joined the BJP.
