Surge in Arabian Sea drone attacks: Indian Navy reacts | ActionPunjab

New Delhi, December 31: In response to a surge in security incidents targeting merchant vessels navigating international shipping lanes, the Indian Navy has heightened its surveillance efforts in the north and central Arabian Sea, along with the Gulf of Aden. This strategic move aims to safeguard maritime activities and provide assistance to merchant vessels in the event of security threats, as detailed in a recent statement by the navy.

Naval task groups, consisting of destroyers and frigates, have been strategically deployed to undertake maritime security operations. Additionally, the navy is collaborating closely with the Coast Guard to assess and address new security risks within the Indian Ocean region. This collaborative effort is crucial for bolstering the overall security infrastructure and response capabilities in the face of evolving threats.

The decision to intensify surveillance comes in the wake of a recent drone attack on the merchant vessel MV Chem Pluto, which occurred approximately 400 km off the Indian coastline. The vessel, carrying a crew of 20 Indians and one Vietnamese, sought refuge at the Mumbai port under the protection of the Coast Guard ship Vikram, just two days after the drone strike in the Arabian Sea.

The Indian Navy emphasised the growing frequency of maritime security incidents targeting merchant vessels transiting through vital international shipping lanes. Notably, incidents such as the piracy attack on MV Ruen, positioned around 700 nautical miles from the Indian coast, and the recent drone strike on MV Chem Pluto, situated approximately 220 nautical miles southwest of Porbandar, underscore a concerning shift in the proximity of maritime incidents towards the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
