PTC Web Desk: The onset of the New Year ushered in widespread traffic chaos and extensive queues at petrol pumps across the nation, as people took to social media platforms to share visual evidence of the mayhem. Cities faced massive gridlocks, with ambulances reported to be stranded in traffic for prolonged periods. The catalyst behind this upheaval? A nationwide truckers’ protest against the newly introduced hit-and-run law.

Three-Day Protest Paralyses Roads

On Monday, drivers began a three-day protest, effectively blocking highways and key roads throughout the country. This demonstration not only resulted in severe traffic congestion, but also raised concerns among citizens regarding an imminent fuel shortage, compelling them to flock to nearby petrol pumps in haste.

Dissent Against New Law

The truckers’ protest is directed at the hit-and-run law incorporated within the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, set to replace the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Under the new law, penalties in road accident cases have escalated significantly, allowing for jail of up to 10 years. This contrasts starkly with the previous Indian Penal Code, where accidental death in a road mishap warranted a maximum jail term of 2 years.

The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita says, “Whoever causes the death of any person by doing any rash or negligent act not amounting to culpable homicide, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to seven years, and shall also be liable to fine.”

Moreover, if the perpetrator evades or delays reporting the incident, the imprisonment term could extend up to 10 years, accompanied by a fine of Rs 7 lakh.

Protesters’ Concerns and Grievances

Protesting truck drivers argue that the new law is draconian and unfairly biased against larger vehicles. “We are drivers, how can we pay such a big fine amount?” said a driver.

Worries About Potential Violence

Additionally, demonstrators worry about potential mob violence against drivers who opt to transport the injured to hospitals. The protest is inclusive of truckers, private bus drivers, and in some instances, even government bus drivers. Reports circulating on social media allege the participation of cab drivers in the protests across several states.

The nationwide unrest continues to impact transportation and fuel access, posing significant challenges to the populace and authorities alike.
