Former Maldives minister highlights longstanding ties with India | Action Punjab

India-Maldives Row: Amid the ongoing row between India and the Maldives over derogatory remarks made by Maldivian leaders against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and India after his recent visit to Lakshadweep, former Maldives Defence Minister Mariya Ahmed Didi said that derogatory comments against Prime Minister Narendra Modi demonstrate the “short-sightedness” of the Maldives government.
Highlighting the longstanding ties with India, former minister added that India has been a reliable ally, providing assistance in various sectors, including defense, and criticized any attempt to undermine the longstanding relationship.

Mentioning India as the “911 call” for the Maldives, always coming to their rescue in times of need, she expressed disappointment over disparaging remarks on ongoing row.

Mariya Ahmed Didi said, “It is the short-sightedness on the part of the present administration… We are a small country who are friends with all, but we cannot deny that we share borders with India. We share similar security concerns. India has always helped us. They have been helping us even in the defence sector with capacity building, providing us with equipment, and trying to make us more self-sufficient.”

Former Maldives Defence Minister said that considering our close friendship, neighboring status, and participation in the global community, it is essential to uphold our international commitments.

She noted the historical “India first” policy and hoped for its continuation, recognizing India as the nearest neighbor that has consistently provided support in times of need.

Maldives and India share common ground in their pursuit of democracy and the promotion of human rights. The present government’s perspective, believing that the longstanding relationship with India can be disregarded, is deemed short-sighted.

India has consistently been our reliable 911 call – whenever in need, a simple call brings you all to our rescue. That’s the kind of friend India has been to us. Witnessing disparaging remarks about such friends is disheartening for everyone involved, expressed former minister.

    India-Maldives controversy

Recently, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted stunning pictures from his visit to Lakshadweep, showcasing his enjoyment amid the beautiful beaches and scenic locations. Despite the visual appeal of the post, it has stirred controversy abroad.

A massive row that is triggered after Maldives deputy minister, along with other cabinet members and government officials, made disparaging and unsavoury references to PM Modi’s Lakshadweep visit, also is likely to have raised people’s interest in the archipelago.
