    Yellow alert issued in Punjab; no relief from severe cold till Lohri | Action Punjab


    Weather update: Biting cold gripped several districts of Punjab and the adjoining states with the minimum temperature dropping to 8-9 degrees Celsius today. 

    Dense fog, low clouds and low visibility persists over several districts of Punjab due to which travellers and passengers all across the Punjab face delays, cancellation in aviation, road transport and train operations, thus paralysing the normal life in state. 

    The weather forecast issued an alert stating that cold to severe cold day conditions are highly likely to persist in certain parts of Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh on January 10 and 11.

    Indian Meteorological Department also issued a cold day warning when the minimum temperature falls below 10°C, and the maximum temperature drops below the normal range by 4.5°C to 6.4°C.

    Yellow Alert issued in Punjab 

    Yellow alert has been issued for fog in Punjab, indicating that chilly conditions will persist till next week. SBS Nagar witnessed the coldest day in the state for the fourth consecutive day. 
    The temperature difference between the minimum and maximum temperatures was only around three degrees in this region.

    No respite from cold wave till Lohri 

    As Punjabis eagerly awaits for the auspicious harvest festival Lohri and people all acoss Punjab are gearing up to celebrate the occasion with a lavish feast, bonfire, and some bhangra expecting relief from cold wave, however as per the weather forecast, there is indicated that there is no relief from the prevailing extreme cold conditions in Punjab till January 13-14 i.e. Lohri.

    Schools shut due to Cold Wave

    Due to prevailing cold weather conditions across Punjab, Punjab Government extended winter holidays from January 8 to 14 for classes up to the 10th grade.  While the timings of the students from Class 9 to 12 have been changed to – 10 am to 3 pm.

    How cold winter wave can affect health? 

    Dense fog and cold winter wave contains particulate matter and other pollutants and in case exposed it gets lodged in the lungs, clogging them and decreasing their functional capacity which increases episodes of wheezing, coughing and shortness of breath. The fog conditions may tend to irritate the membranes of the eye causing various infections leading to redness or swelling of the eye.
