You can soon stream videos on Internet without SIM card; here’s how | Action Punjab

ACTION PUNJAB NEWS Desk: Direct-to-mobile broadcasting may soon become a reality, allowing mobile users to stream videos without the need for a SIM card or an internet connection.

During a Broadcasting Summit, Information and Broadcasting Secretary Apurva Chandra stated that trials of home-grown Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) technology would soon be held in 19 cities and made a strong case for reserving the 470-582 MHz spectrum for this emerging technology.

According to Chandra, shifting 25-30% of video traffic to D2M would free up 5G networks, accelerating the nation’s digital evolution and democratising content delivery.

In the past year, pilot projects to test D2M technology were conducted in Bengaluru, Kartavya Path, and Noida.

Chandra stated that D2M technology would help reach nearly 8-9 crore “TV Dark” homes across the country. Of the country’s 280 million households, only 190 million have televisions.

He stated that there were 80 crore smartphones in the country, with video content accounting for 69 percent of user access.

According to Chandra, heavy use of video clogged mobile networks, resulting in content buffering.

With the potential to reach over a billion mobile devices, D2M technology adoption promises transformative benefits such as cost savings in data transmission and access, increased network efficiency and resilience, and the establishment of a nationwide emergency alert system.
