    INS Visakhapatnam rescues merchant ship from drone attack in Gulf of Aden | Action Punjab


    ACTION PUNJAB NEWS Desk: In a swift response to a distress call, the Indian Navy’s guided missile destroyer, INS Visakhapatnam, came to the aid of a Marshall Island-flagged ship in the Gulf of Aden on Wednesday night. The merchant vessel, MV Genco Picardy, had fallen victim to a drone attack launched by unidentified assailants.

    INS Visakhapatnam, deployed in the Gulf of Aden for anti-piracy operations, promptly acknowledged the distress call from MV Genco Picardy. The drone attack occurred at 11.11 pm on Wednesday, prompting the Indian naval ship to intercept and provide assistance at 12.30 am on the following day.

    The merchant ship, carrying 22 crew members, including 9 Indian sailors, did not report any casualties. In the early hours of January 18, the Navy’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) specialists from INS Visakhapatnam boarded MV Genco Picardy to inspect the damaged area.

    After a thorough inspection and ensuring the vessel’s seaworthiness, the EOD specialists permitted MV Genco Picardy to resume its transit. The Indian Navy’s swift and efficient response showcased its commitment to ensuring maritime security in the region.
