The tragedy unfolded shortly after the aircraft took off from Fort Smith at approximately 8:50 am local time, losing contact with authorities.
The crash site, located 1.1 kilometers from the runway’s end, saw immediate response from military and federal police, aided by Canadian Rangers on snowmobiles and search and rescue technicians parachuting from a Hercules aircraft.
The survivor’s condition remains undisclosed, and the town’s hospital activated its mass casualty protocol. Chief coroner Garth Eggerberger confirmed fatalities without specifying details. The airline, Northwestern Air, identified the aircraft as a Jetstream twin turboprop on a charter flight to a mine.
