Where does moral values in politics stand? | Action Punjab

PTC Web Desk: Bihar’s political turmoil on Sunday have raised several uncomfortable questions, particularly regarding the abandonment of moral values in politics. The focus is not solely on Nitish Kumar’s political maneuvers, but extends to all those who currently support him or have done so in the past. The situation in Bihar can be analysed through five different perspectives.

Firstly, the lens of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections is crucial amid current Bihar’s political turmoil. The BJP has ambitious goals of surpassing Rajiv Gandhi’s 1984 Lok Sabha record and achieving over 50% vote share in collaboration with the NDA. With 40 parliamentary seats at stake in Bihar, political events in the state are of great significance in the lead-up to the elections.

Secondly, there is a concerted attack on the Congress within the Bihar debate. The Janata Dal-United (JDU) has criticised the Congress for its handling of the opposition alliance. This criticism echoes similar moves by other regional parties, such as Mamata Banerjee in Bengal and AAP in Punjab, severing ties with the Congress. The BJP, aiming for a ‘Congress-Mukt Bharat,’ sees an opportunity to weaken the Congress in states where they are in direct competition.

Thirdly, the BJP’s strategy revolves around building a rainbow social coalition with the NDA, encompassing OBCs and Dalits to counterbalance dominant OBCs. This coalition is crucial for the BJP’s performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, especially in Hindi-speaking states.

Fourthly, Nitish Kumar’s shift to the NDA seems more a result of frustration with previous alliance partners than a positive inclination towards the BJP. This raises questions about the legitimacy of his move and potential challenges in the future, especially considering past tensions with non-BJP alliance partners.

End of road for Nitish Kumar?

Lastly, the question arises whether this marks the end of the road for Nitish Kumar. His political maneuvering may have limited room for further somersaults, and the BJP’s long-term vision appears to position itself as the lead party in the state, ultimately sidelining Nitish Kumar in the political landscape. The recent developments indicate a step in that direction.
