    5 dead; 3 FIRs registered, 50 suspects detained | Action Punjab


    Uttarakhand madrasa demolition: At least five people tragically lost their lives and several injured still undergoing treatment after a widespread violence following the demolition of an illegal madrasa and an adjoining mosque in Haldwani in Uttarakhand on Thursday. 

    The violence erupted on Thursday and tensions escalated when a team of government officials, accompanied by a significant police presence, attempted to dismantle the structures in accordance with a court order which prompted the imposition of a curfew in the city, with shoot-at-sight orders issued against rioters and a complete shutdown of internet services.

    Meanwhile, three cases were registered in which 19 people have been named and 5,000 unknown people have also been included in the cases.

    State Additional Director General of Police (ADG) Law & Order AP Anshuman said,: “The situation in Haldwani is normal, curfew has been lifted. Curfew continues in Banbhoolpura. Three FIRs have been registered and five people have been arrested…CCTV footage is being checked…Five people died and three people are seriously injured. Several police officials are injured…”

    Following the anti-encroachment drive, security personnel have been deployed in parts of the violence-hit area after clashes erupted on Thursday night.

    Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami visited Haldwani and said the attack on police personnel, including women officers, was highly condemnable.

    The Chief Minister also inquired about the condition of the women police team and other policemen, administration, municipal corporation personnel, and journalists who were injured in the violence.

    The CM has also given instructions to take strict action against the unruly elements, taking a strict view of the incidents of attacks on police and administration officials and personnel during the removal of illegal construction and spreading unrest in the area.

    The state government issued a high alert across the state on Friday. Meanwhile, the district administration has ordered the suspension of internet services and the closure of all schools and colleges.
