PIL in HC against sealing of borders, shutdown of Internet services | Action Punjab

Chandigarh, February 13: A public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Punjab and Haryana High Court challenging the closure of Punjab and Haryana borders and the suspension of mobile SMS and Internet services in several districts of Haryana in relation to the ongoing farmers’ protest.

The petitioner has urged for an immediate hearing on the demand to lift all restrictions imposed by the Haryana Government to quell the peaceful demonstrations by farmers. The PIL contends that the sealing of borders and shutdown of Internet services not only violate the rights of the farmers, but also cause inconvenience to the general public.

The petitioner, Uday Pratap Singh Kabroop, demanded that the steps taken by the Haryana Government, including sealing the borders of Haryana and Punjab, and the suspension of Internet services, need to be lifted promptly. The plea said these measures were not only infringing upon the rights of the farmers, but are also causing distress to the common citizens.

The PIL, set for an immediate hearing, demands the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s intervention in instructing the removal of these restrictions. The petitioner argues that these actions are adversely affecting the fundamental rights of the farmers and the general public.

Notably, the Haryana Government has taken stringent measures to curtail the farmers’ protest, including sealing borders and disrupting communication services. The PIL encompasses the Central Government, as well as the states of Haryana, Punjab, and Chandigarh, as respondents.

The High Court is scheduled to conduct a hearing on this PIL Tuesday morning to address the urgent concerns raised by the petitioner and decide on the necessary course of action.
