‘Will not contest Lok Sabha election due to health, age issues’ | ActionPunjab

ACTION PUNJAB NEWS Desk: In a heartfelt letter to the voters of Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh, Sonia Gandhi announced her decision not to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections due to health and age-related reasons. Sonia Gandhi, who has represented the Rae Bareli constituency since 2004, hinted at the possibility of a family member succeeding her in the constituency.

Her announcement follows her nomination for the Rajya Sabha seat from Rajasthan, filed just a day prior to her message to the voters of Rae Bareli.

Expressing gratitude to the voters for their unwavering support over the years, Sonia Gandhi emphasised that her heart and soul would always remain connected to them, despite her decision not to contest. She assured them of her continued dedication to their welfare and urged them to stand by her family in the future, as they have in the past.

Speculation arises regarding the potential candidacy of Sonia Gandhi’s daughter, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, in the Rae Bareli Lok Sabha constituency.

Responding to Sonia Gandhi’s decision, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala questioned the Congress party’s future association with Uttar Pradesh, suggesting that the party’s reluctance to contest Rae Bareli indicated fear of losing the seat. The loss of Amethi and the potential loss of Rae Bareli signify a significant shift in the political landscape of Uttar Pradesh, once strong hold for the Congress party. Rahul Gandhi’s defeat in Amethi to BJP’s Smriti Irani during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections underscored this transformation.

Meanwhile, criticism against the Congress mounted in Rajasthan, with BJP spokesperson Laxmikant Bhardwaj condemning the party’s governance and highlighting the rise in crimes against women under its rule. He accused Sonia Gandhi of maintaining silence on these issues and questioned her support for the Rajasthan government despite its failures.
