NCW Chief criticises US writer for labeling India unsafe | ActionPunjab

ACTION PUNJAB NEWS Desk: Rekha Sharma, the chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW), strongly rebuked a US-based writer for tarnishing India’s image on social media following the gangrape of a Spanish woman in Dumka.

David Josef Volodzko, the writer in question, expressed his concerns about female safety in India, recounting instances of sexual aggression he witnessed during his stay in the country. Reacting to his post, Sharma questioned whether any of the incidents he mentioned were reported to the police, highlighting the irresponsibility of solely using social media to defame an entire nation.

Volodzko, residing in Seattle, emphasised his love for India but admitted advising female friends against solo travel due to safety concerns. He recounted disturbing encounters, including one where a young Indian man groped his female friend during an introduction.

The gangrape incident in Dumka involved a Spanish woman, aged 30, and her Brazilian husband, aged 64, who were touring South Asia on a motorcycle. While camping in the forest of Kunji Basti, the couple was attacked by seven men, resulting in the woman being raped and the man assaulted. The perpetrators fled with their belongings, leaving the couple traumatised.
