Dibrugarh (Assam), March 8: Superintendent of Dibrugarh jail, Nipen Das, has been arrested following the discovery of a spy camera and smartphone in a cell, pointing towards a major security lapse. In February, unauthorised activities were detected in the National Security Act (NSA) cell at Dibrugarh jail, where ‘Waris Punjab De’ chief Amritpal Singh and his associates are currently lodged under advanced security measures.
GP Singh, Director General of Police for Assam, said a search operation at the Dibrugarh jail revealed several unauthorised items, including a spy camera, smartphone, keypad phone, pen drive, Bluetooth headphones and speakers, a smartwatch, among other things, from the NSA cell. The Assam DGP clarified that all confiscated items were done legally by the jail staff, and investigations are ongoing to determine their source.
Upon receiving information about unauthorised activities in the NSA cell, additional CCTV cameras were installed in the public area of the NSA Block. Subsequent confirmation of unauthorised activities led to a search operation by jail staff, resulting in the seizure of various items. The police said steps were being taken for legal action and to prevent future occurrences.
In response to these incidents, additional CCTV cameras have been installed in the public area of the NSA Block. The police highlighted the jail’s comprehensive security system, including 24-hour, three-tier security, CCTV cameras, and coordination between state and central authorities.
