PTC Web Desk: Gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari has been awareded life sentence in a fake arms license case. A special court in Varanasi on Tuesday found gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari guilty in a 36-year-old case involving counterfeit arms licenses.
As per the case registered at Mohammadabad police station in Ghazipur district on June 10, 1987, Mukhtar Ansari had acquired a license for a double-barrel gun using falsified documents.
Ansari, who has faced numerous legal battles and is currently lodged in Banda jail since 2021, was transferred from a Punjab jail. Special Judge Avnish Gautam of the Varanasi MP-MLA Court pronounced the verdict in this case.
Back in 1990, the CBCID filed an FIR against Ansari for allegedly acquiring an arms license through fraudulent means while serving as an MLA. The fake arms license was reportedly issued with forged signatures of the then District Magistrate Alok Ranjan and Superintendent of Police Devraj Nagar. Ansari’s legal counsel asserted his presence during the trial via video conferencing.
In December 2023, another special court sentenced Ansari to five-and-a-half years in prison for issuing a death threat to a coal trader in 1997. Alongside the imprisonment, the MP-MLA court imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on Ansari for threatening Mahaveer Prasad Ranguta with his life.
The threat, issued in January 1997, involved Ansari’s intention to detonate Ranguta’s residence in Varanasi. Following the completion of the hearing on December 5, the court deliberated and subsequently convicted Ansari, declaring the extent of his punishment. Ansari participated in the legal proceedings through video conferencing from Banda jail.
A five-time MLA representing the Mau Assembly constituency, Ansari opted out of contesting the 2022 Assembly elections. Instead, his son Abbas Ansari secured the seat under the banner of the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP).
