    Farmers’ protest LIVE UPDATES | Protesting farmers announced to extend their ‘Delhi Chalo’ march until February 29 and remain stationed along the Punjab-Haryana border until that date. The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM), the leading farmer organizations driving the protest at the Shambu and Khanuari borders, stated that they would decide on the next course of action on February 29.

    Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) to observe ‘Quit WTO Day’ today during which they will place tractors on National-State Highways from 12 pm to 4 pm without disrupting traffic.

    Farmer unions all set to hold tractor marches on both state and National Highways in the district. Their objective is to rally support from the agricultural community for the protest against the Central Government and to advocate for a legal assurance for minimum support price (MSP) on crops.

    February 26: Effigies of the WTO will be burned in villages in the morning

    February 27: National-level meetings of both forums will convene at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders

    February 28: A joint meeting of both forums is scheduled

    February 29: An announcement regarding the continuation of the farmers’ protest will be made. 

    Giving a call to march to Delhi, the farmers have been massing and camping at multiple points in areas bordering the national capital since February 13 along with their tractors, mini-vans and pickup trucks, demanding, among others, a law guaranteeing MSP (minimum support price) and withdrawal of police cases against farmers during earlier protests.

    During the last round of talks, which ended past midnight on February 18, the panel of three Union ministers made an offer to buy five crops –moong dal, urad dal, tur dal, maize and cotton–from farmers at MSP for five years through central agencies.

      WTO subsidy policy bad for farmers

      Ahead of the launch of a nationwide tractor procession on highways to press for their demands, farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher, General Secretary of the Punjab Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, reiterated the legal guarantee of Minimum Support Price (MSP) demands from the government, stating that the government of India should take India out of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

      He said that the policy of the WTO is “very bad for farmers.”
